The best checkout clean starts before the final morning. Work from high surfaces to floors, keep evidence of condition and agree which appliances and hidden areas are included.
1. Start with the tenancy record
Read the inventory and check-in report before cleaning. Those documents show the recorded condition and help you focus on differences rather than chasing an impossible idea of brand new.
Photograph each room after cleaning, including appliance interiors when they are part of the agreed scope. Keep dated images until the deposit is settled.
2. Kitchen checklist
Empty cupboards, wipe shelves and clean reachable surfaces. Degrease the hob and splashback, clear crumbs from edges and check the extractor exterior.
Oven interiors take focused time and should be agreed specifically. Defrost freezers safely in advance and never leave standing water on laminate floors.

3. Bathroom checklist
Remove limescale from taps, screens and tiles with a product suitable for the finish. Clean grout, sanitaryware, mirrors and reachable vents.
Check behind the toilet and around seals. Report damaged silicone or mould that cleaning alone cannot solve rather than disguising it.
A good checkout clean is methodical rather than dramatic: every room, every agreed surface, then one final walk-through.
4. Bedrooms and living areas
Dust from high to low: fittings, shelves, skirtings, sockets and then floors. Check inside empty wardrobes and remove adhesive marks carefully.
Vacuum edges and beneath movable furniture. Natural wear is not the same as dirt, and a cleaner should not promise to repair damage through cleaning.
5. Oxford rental timing
Oxford's large student population makes late summer and early autumn exceptionally busy. Book the move and clean together early when a September checkout date is fixed.
In HMOs, agree who is responsible for communal areas. One unclear hallway can hold up an otherwise complete handover.
The honest verdict
If the property is already well maintained, a focused final clean may be enough. If grease, limescale or dust has built up, allow time for a true deep clean.
- Ask for the full scope in writing.
